The course provides teams of educators with shared knowledge and understanding of contemporary research in assessment and the practical application of this research in their current teaching practice. Participants engage as critical and reflective thinkers as they develop their capacity to construct, analyse, and evaluate current and future assessment practices.  

Course Structure

The AES course comprises five modules, each intended to develop and improve a different skill set, which combine to form the basis of valid and reliable assessment practice.

Each module provides eight hours of professional learning; six hours of face-to-face professional learning presented by our experienced and qualified Prescient team members, and two hours of supporting activities to consolidate learning.

Modules may be undertaken individually, or as a comprehensive course.

Modules

AES 1 - Principles of assessment

This module caters to the holistic needs of educators across all subject areas and career stages.

In AES 1- Principles of assessment, educators develop their:

  • knowledge and understanding of assessment as an integral component of course planning and design.
  • strategies for selecting effective and accessible language that supports student learning. 
  • capacity to construct, develop and evaluate the validity and reliability of assessment. 
AES 2 - Assessment purpose and design

This module explores the way the principles of assessment can be applied to teaching practice, and how different methods of evidence collection can be used to make judgments about student progress.

In AES 2 - Assessment purpose and design, educators develop their:

  • knowledge and understanding of the relationship between assessment and learning
  • ability to understand, identify and assess learning constructs
  • capacity to evaluate assessment approaches and work collaboratively with colleagues to differentiate assessment strategies to improve student outcomes
AES 3 - Judgment

This module provides an opportunity to develop capacity to evaluate assessment approaches and develop a range of differentiated assessment strategies to meet the needs of varying cohorts.

In AES 3 - Judgment, educators:

  • select appropriate criteria to assess
  • recognise and manage potential biases that impact the reliability of judgment making
  • develop their knowledge and understanding of the use of analytic and holistic methods to judge student learning
  • reflect critically on grading and aggregating practices.
AES 4 - Feedback and data

This module focuses on developing capacity to use assessment data to inform practice and provide feedback to move learning forward.

In AES 4 - Feedback and data, educators extend their:

  • understanding of how assessment data may be used to promote learning and inform teaching practice
  • understanding of the role that feedback has in improving student outcomes
  • capacity to provide practical feedback that can be used to promote learning.
AES 5 - Moderation and reporting

This module provides the opportunity to deeply understand the purpose and importance of moderation procedures and enables teachers to develop skills to organise and lead moderation processes within a school.

In AES 5 - Moderation and reporting, educators develop their:

  • understanding of the need for comparability of judgments
  • capacity to compare student evidence to generate a set of work which exemplifies the standard
  • capacity to communicate their evidence based reasoning for how a judgment has been made.

AITSL & TRB requirements

Each module is referenced to the AITSL Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. The modules meet the requirements for accumulation of standards referenced professional learning hours required by teacher registration boards (TRB).
